Speen Village Fete
Speen Fete is an annual event. It has been organised by the Lions Club of Newbury since 2019 who took it over from the Speen Fete Committee. The Lions club is a member of the international Lions Clubs and all the money it raises goes towards local charitable initiatives.
The SAA has always had a wonderful stall at the Speen Village Fete. Plot holders and others donate plants, seedlings, rhubarb stalks etc to fund-raise. The stall is always very popular and raises hundreds of pounds for SAA funds.
Cliff Sells, former Chairman prior to the change to charitable status, remains the main driving force for the stall and works tirelessly to ensure adequate produce is available for sale. However, all and any donations of plants, volunteers to help move the plants and set up the stall in the morning, and extra hands on the afternoon are always very welcome.
The Covid-19 pandemic meant that the fete was cancelled in 2020 and staged later than normal in 2021, in September.
Coupled with the Lions incentive to take 50% of the income from the sales of raffle tickets SAA managed to generate funds of more than £200 at the 2021 and 2022 events. It remains a very popular event indeed!
