What's New - Spring 2016

Picture
Speen Parish Fete
The annual village fete will take place on June 11th between 2.00pm - 5.00pm.  Any donations of plants for the stall would be appreciated, we are also looking for volunteers to help set up and  man the stall on the day.  Please let a member of the committee know if you can help.  This is a great afternoon of old-fashioned community fun with lots for all the family, from races and games for the kids, to our plant stall, a bric-a-brac stall, and teas / coffee / cakes (and perhaps even a drop of beer!) for the grown ups.  Do try to come along and bring friends, family, neighbours. Funds raised are ploughed back into community groups, inclding supporting our allotments.  Added 1/6/16.
New Secretary:  we are delighted to welcome Nicky Jenkins as our new Secretary.  Nicky has been a plot holder for a couple of years and has kindly offered to take on the role with immediate effect.  Added 16/4/16
New helpers to maintain equipment & water system:
Noel Flynn and Lee Rhodes have volunteered to maintain the SAA equipment and the water system, with the help of the membership if needed.  On behalf or members, we would like to thank them for their commitment to the Association. April 2016
We need general committee members
We are looking for volunteers from within the ranks of our members to join the committee in order to secure the future of our Association.  If you are interested, please contact Cliff Sells or Alan Foley as soon as possible.
cliffsells@hotmail.co.uk
alanjfoley@yahoo.co.uk
These positions are not onerous but are essential roles. April 2016
Plots available:
We have three plots available currently (16th April 2016).  If you are interested in having a plot, please contact cliffsells@hotmail.co.uk.  Speen residents are given priority though all Newbury residents are welcome to apply.
Hedge and Ditch Clearing - NOW CANCELLED: we had planned this for Sunday 08th May. However, the Committee have decided now to delay this until September to protect nesting birds and encourage other wildlife to the allotments.
Committee Members leave us:
Sue Barrington and Mike Dunne have resigned from the Committee in the last few weeks.  Sue has a large garden which is taking her time and energy leaving her little time for an allotment these days.  Sue has been on the Committee for several years and we will miss her calm & friendly ways.
Mike, who has been our committed and very diligent Secretary for over a year, has resigned and given up his plot for family reasons.
We are very sorry to see them leave the Committee.  We wish them well and thank them for all their hard work.  April 2016
No bonfires between May 1st and end September.
Members are advised that no bonfires are permitted to be lit at any time of day or night between these dates in consideration of our neighbours.

Water Butts:
Our water on the allotments is precious and can run out at critical growing times.  Please could members try to have water butts on their own plots, especially those with sheds who can collect the water in guttering.  Having your own source of water will ease the demand during hot weather but also ensure you have a small amount when the communal tanks are empty.
You can fill your water butt from the communal tanks only until the end of April and then again at the end of October.  Also, please DO NOT ever help yourself to water from anywhere other than the communal tanks.  Aprl 2016
Spare seedlings, seed potatoes etc
If you have any spare seedlings, plants, cuttings, seed potatoes etc, please leave them at the front gate so others can take a few if desired.  If you help yourself to some of these plants, please be considerate and only take what you need.  It's good to share!
